Keurig machines are not cut out for espresso so that rules them out for many coffee lovers.

If you’re looking for coffee, though, many Nespresso machines can help you out there while also enabling you to draw off strong, short shots in the morning.

Keurig did test the waters with its Rico machine but that espresso machine along with the K-Cups has been discontinued.

Nespresso has both a recycling program and an AAA Sustainable Quality Program.

The recycling program to help reduce the environmental backlash from aluminum pods didn’t get much traction and it’s slowly been replaced by a Positive Cup program. Here, there are clear guidelines laid down for sustainability and further reducing the impact of coffee capsule packaging.

Keurig doesn’t fare quite so well. The pods are made from plastic bodies, aluminum tops and paper filters that mean they’re almost impossible to recycle.

While Keurig has stated the intention of going fully recyclable by 2020, that hasn’t happened yet.

Whichever machine you choose, you’ll have to accept packing a slightly heavier eco-footprint in the quest for the utmost in convenience.

If you favor espresso-based drinks and you’re looking to invest in a machine that’s built to last the distance, Nespresso machines are likely your best bet. While a few of the lower-end machines come with a bit too much plastic, most of the models are rugged.

For a more cost-effective alternative catering for non-espresso drinks with a great deal of choice across the board, you might want to investigate Keurig.
